These terms are an agreement between you and the independent developer of Pickbook. By installing or using the app, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.
Pickbook is a free, quiet app for daily book discovery. There are no accounts, no ads, and no in-app purchases.
You may use Pickbook if you are old enough to enter into a binding agreement where you live, and in any case at least 13 years old (or 16 in regions where that is the relevant minimum). The app is not directed at children under those ages.
You are granted a personal, limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to install and use Pickbook on Apple devices you own or control, for your own non-commercial use. This license is also subject to Apple's standard App Store Licensed Application End User License Agreement, which applies to every app distributed through the App Store.
You may not copy, modify, reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract the source code of the app, except to the extent that applicable law allows you to do so regardless of this restriction.
Pickbook is a quiet, personal app. Please use it in good faith. In particular, do not use the app or the backend in any way that breaks the law where you live; do not try to disrupt, overload, probe, or attack the backend; do not attempt to access data that does not belong to your device identifier, or impersonate another user's identifier; and do not use automated tools, scrapers, or bots to interact with the backend at scale.
We may rate-limit or block requests that appear abusive.
Pickbook does not require an account. Your "profile" is just an anonymous identifier generated on your device, along with the books you save and the activity you record. You are responsible for the device on which you use the app. If you hand the device to someone else, they will see your library.
You can reset your preferences using "Start over" or wipe everything tied to your identifier using "Delete profile" in Settings, at any time, for any reason.
The books surfaced in Pickbook are drawn from publicly available catalogs, including the Google Books, Open Library, and Hardcover APIs. Book titles, author names, cover artwork, and descriptions come from these catalogs and remain the property of their respective rights holders. We do not own them.
Pickbook does not generate book summaries with artificial intelligence. The summaries shown in the app are publisher-supplied descriptions sourced from the catalogs above.
We do our best to present accurate information, but catalog entries and ratings may be incomplete, out of date, or wrong. Treat them as a starting point, not a definitive source.
Some of the "Get this book" links in the app are affiliate links to retailers such as Apple Books, Bookshop.org, and Amazon. If you make a purchase through one of those links, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Affiliate relationships never change which books are recommended to you.
You can stop using Pickbook at any time by deleting the app. You can also wipe your server-side data at any time with "Delete profile" in Settings.
We may suspend or terminate access to the backend, in whole or for a specific device identifier, if the app is being abused or if we need to take the service down. Because Pickbook is free and uses no account, this generally just means requests stop working until the situation is resolved.
We may also discontinue the app or the backend service entirely. If that happens, we will try to give reasonable notice inside the app.
Pickbook is provided as-is and as-available. While the app is built with care, it is offered without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement. We do not guarantee that the app will always be available, that the daily pick will suit your taste, or that the catalog will be free of errors.
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties, so parts of this section may not apply to you. In that case, those warranties are limited to the minimum extent permitted by law.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, the developer of Pickbook is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, profit, or goodwill, arising out of your use of the app. Total liability for any direct damages connected to the app is limited to the amount you have paid for it, which today is zero.
Nothing in these terms limits liability for fraud, gross negligence, willful misconduct, or anything else that cannot be limited by law in your jurisdiction.
These terms are governed by the laws of Germany, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules, since the backend is operated from there. If you are a consumer, this choice of law does not deprive you of the protection of mandatory consumer-protection rules of the country where you live, and you may bring claims in the courts of that country where local law allows.
If you downloaded Pickbook from Apple's App Store, you acknowledge that these terms are between you and the developer, not Apple, and that Apple is not responsible for the app or its content. Apple has no obligation to provide support for the app. If the app fails to conform to any applicable warranty that cannot be disclaimed, you may notify Apple, and Apple may refund the purchase price (which is zero). Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.
If these terms change, the updated version will be shipped inside a new release of the app with a new effective date. Continuing to use the app after that date means you accept the updated terms. If a change materially reduces your rights, your options are to stop using the app and, if you wish, delete your profile.
